Reading List

Eric Rothwell (’12 MSMIT, ’96 CLAS) shared that he’d just finished reading "Managing Transitions: Making the Most of Change, 3rd Edition" by William Bridges, PhD.

From Eric:  The book is well written and addresses the psychological/emotional transitions involved when people experience change. The topics covered can be applied to organizations, teams, and individuals in both their professional and personal lives. This is especially important now, more than ever, as change happens continuously, simultaneously, and at an ever-faster pace.

These transitions are an inescapable component of any project or endeavor involving business process improvement, mergers/acquisitions, and changes in strategic direction and executives, managers, and team leaders should know how to effectively manage them to increase the likelihood that the desired changes are timely and successful. I have been personally involved in projects where these transitions were ignored and know that it was not a pleasant experience and that the projects were not as successful as they could have been.

I am about to kick off a Microsoft Project Server implementation project at Meridium in January, and am doing all I can to minimize the negative impacts of the changes to the organization and the individual contributors while realizing the potential benefits as quickly as possible. Managing transitions will be an important part of that effort."

Thanks, Eric!  I would love for you to share your reading ideas with me.  Just email me at acarter@Virginia.edu.

"IT-enabled marketing"--how to identify the best business opportunities and greatest risks.

Analytics, data mining, and Big Data are hot topics now.  But deploying these tools depend on the questions executives ask, and how they intend to uncover business development risks and opportunities.  How companies frame the problems they're seeking to solve has a great bearing on the value of what they discover.  As we've learned through some notable debacles, 'because we can generate the information' doesn't always yield valuable insights.

McIntire NOVA Class launches “Data Bites” Forum with Senior Federal IT Leaders

With only a few months of classroom lectures at the new Waterview Conference Center in Rosslyn, McIntire, MSMIT students are launching a new lecture series featuring Senior Federal IT leaders while also spotlighting their impressive new classroom facility. “It’s difficult to not appreciate the unparalleled view of all of DC and not wonder what challenges face the senior IT leader in one of the world’s most powerful cities” said Will Gorham, Class of 2013 student and one of two founders of the Data Bites speaker forum concept. Data Bites is a simple, half hour discussion forum featuring senior federal leaders in IT followed by a networking event.  “Peter Hu, (Data Bites co-founder) and I felt federal and private sector students could greatly benefit from a federal IT perspective. Not only would this brief introduction provide some insight into federal IT challenges, but it would also provide McIntire student visibility into federal business and employment opportunities.” Topics of discussion are set by the speaker and are non- attribution.

The inaugural Data Bites forum is honored to have as its first speaker April Battle, Director of Agency Outreach and Agency Implementation Team for The Department of the Treasury.  Ms. Battle reports to the Deputy Commissioner for Finance and Administration and is responsible for providing strategic vision and overarching support to the agency marketing/messaging, outreach/engagement, and enterprise-wide product/service implementation. Prior to this position, April served as Director of Agency Relationship Management for Federal Finance.  April holds multiple certifications in areas such as governance of enterprise information technology, risk and information system control, change leadership, managing organizational and individual transition, and organizational development.  April earned a Master of Administrative Science and Information Technology degree from The Johns Hopkins University and BBA in Management of Information Systems from Loyola University of Maryland.
