1. INTRODUCTION

My name is Aimee Carter and I have recently joined the Development and Alumni Engagement team at McIntire and I wanted to write to introduce myself as the face behind this blog and as your alumni connection to the McIntire School of Commerce. I am so excited to be working with all of you and helping to strengthen the network that you have with one another and connect you with the current students, the McIntire School of Commerce and fellow Virginia alumni.

I am joining the McIntire team from the University of Virginia’s Office of Engagement as the Associate Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement and before that as the Director of Special Events for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. My background experience has included a variety of work including volunteer management, special event planning, fundraising, sales and marketing. I am a graduate of Elon University in Elon, North Carolina and have my Masters work in Higher Education Administration at Ole Miss. I live in the area with my husband and our two children. In our house we are avid sports fans and follow the Pittsburgh Steelers and Virginia Cavaliers with unbridled passion.

Richard Ross (MS in MIT ’11) – Senior Director, Office of the CIO, The College Board. (Reston, VA)

1) What were your expectations of the MS MIT degree as you were going into the program?
Course content that I could apply to my job immediately, spirited discussion in the classroom, networking opportunities, forge a few close relationships with faculty and classmates.

2) Have you made a career change since you completed the degree? What elements of the program were helpful in making this change?
Yes. I moved from a Technology Consulting role to an in house opportunity helping drive Strategic Technology Planning and IT Business Operations. Elements of the program that helped me make the change included the constant focus on tying every technology decision to the idea of business value. Throughout the different Mods, various levers were identified through discussion or course content which helped me better articulate my potential value prop. in a strategic role with my new organization.

3) What advice/words of wisdom do you have for MS MIT students who are considering either a job change or career change now that they are working towards the MS MIT degree?
Advice: Do not make the change mid program; wait until after the program. With that being said, no matter when you make the change - be sure that you are moving into a role that allows you to develop a line of sight between your specific role and how you can influence the core competencies of your new organization. If you can do that, in most organizations you will be able to tie the impact of your daily decisions to overall corporate objectives. Move into a role out of your comfort zone - if you are a technologist at heart, ensure you gain some experience in a pure business role; if you are business oriented and have not written a line of code - gain experience as a member of solution development team, expose yourself to engineers and developers - understand the technology. As you consider your next role, don't change for the sake of change - change because the new role will bolster your value prop. to the organization.

D.C. Career Fair

McIntire is once again teaming with MyWorkster.com and several other universities to execute an alumni-only career fair in Washington, DC on June 9. It will take place at the George Washington University Charles E. Smith Center, 600 22nd Street NW, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Last year’s event was very successful, with over 70 employers and hundreds of alumni from several top universities participating.

Thank you for all of your support and for joining M.S. MIT ONE. During the month of March we had 284 M.S. MIT Alumni join and support the School. From the 284 alumni we raised a little over $30,000 + an additional $28,400 ($100 match) for a grand total of $60,000 for the program. This does not include all of the company matches we are working on collecting. Thank you!

Stefano Dinner Update

Last Friday Stefano hosted the dinner at his home. A few comments from our guests:

“It was truly a wonderful evening and experience. I can tell you it will be impossible to ever go to an Italian restaurant again... they set the bar pretty high.”

M.S. in MIT Program Celebrates Anniversaries with Gala Weekend of Educational, Social Activities

Celebrative events to be held Oct. 28-30, 2010

McIntire’s highly acclaimed Master’s in the Management of Information Technology (M.S. in MIT) Program marks two milestone anniversaries this year, and celebrations are in order. 2010 heralds the program’s 20th birthday, as well as the 10th birthday of its popular executive-format option.

“This year marks 20 years of innovation, leadership, and success in graduate education at McIntire,” says Ryan Nelson, Professor of Information Technology and Director of McIntire’s Center for the Management of Information Technology. “We look forward to celebrating the program’s remarkable achievements with the many M.S. in MIT alumni, faculty, and friends who have contributed so much to the program for two decades.”

Activities for Everyone
The anniversary celebration will include a wide variety of activities, from which alumni are free to choose. The weekend celebration will kick off with the Third Annual Knowledge Continuum Executive Residency, to be held Oct. 28 and half of Oct. 29 in Rouss & Robertson Halls. Speakers will include M.S. in MIT faculty members Peter Gray, Stefano Grazioli, Mike Morris, Ryan Nelson, and Barb Wixom, among others.

“Lifelong learning is so important to our alumni,” says Wixom, who also serves as Director of the M.S. in MIT Program’s Northern Virginia section. “We felt that a celebration of the M.S. in MIT Program wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of a leading-edge educational component.” The Knowledge Continuum is a two-day executive residency designed to provide alumni of McIntire’s M.S. in MIT Program and other IT professionals with a continuation of their academic learning experience.

The Knowledge Continuum’s academic portion will be punctuated by an evening of alumni networking, cocktails, and dinner, to take place Oct. 28.

This year’s Knowledge Continuum will include participation in a Center for the Management of Information Technology (CMIT) program, which will be held the afternoon of Oct. 29 in Robertson Hall. The CMIT event will feature presentations by industry experts, and will be followed by a second networking, cocktails, and dinner event, open to all M.S. in MIT alumni. Stay tuned for further details on the CMIT speakers.

Finally, all M.S. in MIT alumni are invited to attend an alumni tailgate event Oct. 30, followed by a group outing to the U.Va.-Miami football game.

Grameen Foundation’s Technology for Microfinance (Tech4MF) team is transforming technology from a barrier into an accelerator for microfinance institutions. The team focuses on educating MFI leaders on the long-term strategic value of information systems, training their staff to successfully align information technology with their business operations, and building a network of locally based technology providers and a worldwide online community to support these institutions. At the heart of the program is Mifos™, our open source software platform that gives MFIs a cost-effective, flexible management information system (MIS) that can support their needs today and into the future.

Mifos has been deployed successfully at MFIs worldwide in countries such as India, Philippines, Tunisia, and Lebanon. The Tech4MF team is now embarking on two new Mifos enterprise deployments at MFIs in Nairobi, Kenya.

Job Summary:
We are currently seeking an experienced technical project manager to manage the end-to-end deployments from June - December. This role will oversee the implementation process through the entire lifecycle from project planning through configuration, feature delivery, legacy data migration, user acceptance testing and a production pilot at a sample of branches. Additionally, reflective of most start-up environments, this is very much a hands-on position, with technical project management and in-the-trenches tactical work required.

The ideal candidate should have a proven ability to manage the full lifecycle of a systems integration software deployment, ideally in an international context. The ideal candidate has extensive experience with application configuration and integration with other software solutions, excellent communication and collaboration skills, managing multiple projects at once, and comfort operating independently with remote management.

This role will report to the Professional Services Director located in Seattle, Washington. The engagement will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Reporting and relationships: The Technical Deployment PM will report to the Director of Professional Services, Technology for Microfinance team.

Availability: The Technical PM will be expected to work a standard workweek of 37.5 hours plus additional hours as necessary to get the job done. This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya and may require travel of up to 20% regionally.

Essential Job Functions:
• Lead the technical implementation of Mifos at two MFIs, ensuring both MFIs go live on-time and on-budget. Key responsibilities include:
o Manage the overall project planning and schedule
o Infrastructure assessment and remediation planning
o Product configuration
o Integration of Mifos and core operational business processes
o Oversee development of data migration scripts and ensure successful data migration
o Ensure feature and report delivery
o Facilitate end-user training
o End user acceptance testing and live pilot
• Coordinate and manage the execution of the activities of GF and MFI project team members and consultants. For example,
o Work closely with on-site T4MF accounting consultant responsible for accounting package selection, configuration and integration with Mifos.
o Work closely with other T4MF Professional Services team members who will conduct IT Strategy analysis, conduct Business Process Management workshops, and document Mifos business case
o Manage remote engineering staff in India to generate custom reports
o Manage remote engineering staff in India to develop data migration scripts and oversee successful migration of legacy data
o Work closely with engineering staff in the US who will build custom features.
• Plan and manage the necessary human resources for the project. Work closely with the IT team at each MFI to ensure on-the-job skill transfer so that the MFI is successful managing the technology platform after pilot. Identify needed technical resources (power users) at the MFI to operate the software and provide internal help desk support.
• Become knowledgeable regarding Mifos functionality, foundational technology, and active in the open source community - able to install and configure Mifos locally.
• Share and document challenges, learnings, and best practices to other GF Technology Program Managers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Deep commitment to eradication of poverty and alignment with Grameen Foundation’s mission
• Strong project management experience in technology; technology-related international development preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and execute software application implementations at customer site (strong project management, client management, training, with full implementation lifecycle) with limited supervision.
• Ability to effectively communicate priorities, delivery expectations, risks and concerns to multiple stakeholders
• Strong technical skills - solid understanding of SQL, ability to read and understand data models and relational databases, and familiarity with web technologies a plus.
• Strong relationship management skills to build deep, learning relationships with key customer - comfortable presenting to a room of business executives and discussing needs with villagers in rural locations.
• Proven ability to lead and succeed in a collaborative, startup-paced environment
• Exceptional communication skills – Fluency in English, knowledge of local Kenyan dialects a plus.

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in computer science, or related field, a plus.
• Five or more years of related systems integration project management experience or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.

Cloud computing has arrived. More and more organizations are turning to cloud computing to reduce costs and shorten the time to market. While traditional corporate data centers and on-premise software are not going away, cloud computing will have a far-reaching impact on enterprise IT and business in virtually all organizations. The objective of this CMIT program will be to help CIOs and other business leaders "lift the fog" and look beyond the hype to see what opportunities and challenges lie in the cloud. · Setup applications from Web sphere Application Server 6.0 Network Deployment on multiple servers. Must have strong experience in high volume enterprise level Web Sphere Admin function in distributed computing environment including Load balancers by implementing session persistence
· Analyze all aspects of the existing infrastructure and recommends modifications that will enhance system reliability, availability, serviceability and scalability
· Implement horizontal and vertical clustering, Work Load Management (WLM) to make the application Highly Available. Involvement in Performance Monitoring and Tuning of Applications.
· Automate application deployment, startup, shutdown and enhancements using RSync, JACL scripts for (recycling the application server, deploying customer applications, logs rotation, monitor applications state, etc.).
· Installed EARs, WARs and configured application specific JVM settings. Configure Web Sphere resources including JDBC providers, JDBC data sources, and connection pools. Creating Version 6 Data Source depending on the enterprise application needs.
· Enabled security for the Admin Console and the application components by creating user registry in LDAP and setup VeriSign SSL certificates
· Monitor for Application core dumps, or forced thread dumps to check for system objects using thread analyzer. Administer various Log files using log analyzer, Product logs, Installation logs, Administer server logs, Application server logs.
· Troubleshoot and debug any errors occurring in application server environment, application debugging, heap analysis and error doc gathering required (i.e. Thread dump, heap dump). Must be able to analyze and tune Web, App server configurations (plug-in, httpd.conf...etc...)
· Working knowledge of JMS, J2EE environment and IBM Rational Applications Developer
· Self-motivated and able to carry on critical system tasks to support development, QA, Staging and production environments - Teamwork attitude in order to work closely with application development, Unix SAs, Networking and business teams.
· Provide 24x7 on-call support of middleware applications as part of rotating team coverage

Networks of both formal and informal relationships are increasingly the means by which organizations create value and drive innovation. However, most leaders have only a vague idea of the networks around them and often don’t consider the possibility of trying to manage them to boost their organizations’ performance. Our research over the past decade has shown that leaders who are in the top 20% performer category throughout their careers tend to tap into networks to compensate for weaknesses in formal structures and obtain a multiplier effect on key talent and expertise in their organization. This session will describe how successful leaders obtain performance impact through networks and specific ways that CIOs have been driving these ideas into their organizations.

Forrester surveyed 196 enterprise architects about their usage of enterprise architecture (EA)
frameworks. Fifty-five percent of companies use custom approaches; 30% use the Zachman Framework;
26% rely on a consulting company to supply an EA framework; and 16% use TOGAF. The survey suggests that firms lack a clear justification for picking any one EA framework. Forrester recommends choosing one of more than 20 pre-existing EA frameworks and tuning it to your organizational constraints and your EA objectives — depending on your enterprise’s EA experience, this is preferable to building a new one. After choosing a framework, make sure to evangelize its usage and justify the choice, as it will become one of the key communication tools for marketing EA.

Description: A Senior Program Manager is needed to help lead a 30 million dollar Business Process Improvement and IT Support Services Contract with an emerging Navy client. The position is contingent of contract award. IT support service areas include tier 1, 2 and 3 help desk and network engineering, web design and maintenance, business system (Oracle ERP and BI), IT logistics and information assurance. Contract will be base plus 4 option years on a cost plus award fee contract.

Qualifications: 10 years IT Program Management experience is required. Masters degree, Navy or other DoD management experience and PMP certification are desired.

Compensation: 120 - 140K (Anticipated)

• The Analyst Relations Program Manager is a mid-level, external facing role that requires a unique blend of telecommunication industry exposure, understanding of the underlying technology, experience with the technology analysts’ ecosystem and ability to project manage marketing programs.
• The person must have a strong inclination towards technology and business consulting skills, they need to:
1. understand end customer needs, both carrier and enterprise customers
2. understand the analyst ecosystem
3. understand the competition in the service provider space
• This person will build the program to gain and retain the share of mind from various analyst by building and driving an integrated communication program
• The position represents the voice of the analysts within the company, by being able to communicate with these stakeholder within the company:
1. Senior management to present the program and help craft the outreach strategy
2. Product management and other subject matter experts to define the messaging framework
3. Corporate/Product marketing to define the program requirements and execution support

RESPONSIBILITIES
Create the framework of our analysts influence program based on our objectives and based on a deep understanding of the industry analyst ecosystem.

REQUIREMENTS

• MBA

• Superior communication skills

PREFERRED

• MBA from a tier 1 (top 20) program and at least 5 years total experience
• Knowledgeable in telecom network & managed service technology
• Engineering degree or product work experience a strong plus
• International experience
• This position is located in the US, preferably Northern VA.

The goal of our capstone project is to present your company a business proposal that offers competitive advantage, after first developing a complete understanding of your business strategy and industry in the context of today's economy.

My team is comprised of myself and five colleagues - we are serious professionals with 10-25 years of solid business experience each.
